GWIN MEETING RECAP: DECEMBER MEETING & FUNDRAISER HIGHLIGHTS!
Christmas is often a time to be thankful. Thankful for the friends and family we have near and far; thankful that we are able to share with others.
On December 5, 2017, 58 GWIN members and guests gathered to celebrate the season and share with our community.
The Guelph Women in Crisis has been part of the community for 40 years and although it is unfortunate that they must exist, we are grateful that they do.
The GWIN Fundraising Committee worked tirelessly to reach out to local businesses and was able to collect over 135 donations to offer as prizes for the Penny Table.
Joining us for the evening were Executive Director, Sly Castaldi and Justine Morgan from the GWIC.
Sly spoke briefly about the history of the shelter and how it has grown from a one room crisis call centre with one phone to a 28 bed shelter.
The shelter helps 1500 local women annually and on average fields 3000 crisis calls. As always, when there is media attention of current events such as Jon Ghomeshi and Harvey Weinstein, there are increases in calls.
In order to increase awareness and accountability, Marianne’s Place has “gone public”. They hope to make everyone aware of the domestic and sexual violence many women in the community face daily.
GWIC has recently received funding for a human trafficking program. They will have counselors available to assist women who have become victims of this exploitation.
In addition to the gifts collected for prizes, members and guests donated day to day items, personal items and toiletries. Keep in mind that GWIN will accept these items year round.
GWIN members and guests raised over $1200 with 100% of tickets sales of the fundraising evening going directly to GWIC.
Besides the evening of fellowship and good will, members enjoyed some good cheer too.
Thank you as always to Springfield Golf and Country Club for the delicious traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings.
Thank you Daina of the Christmas committee for organizing “Holiday Family Feud”. Many laughs with the fun and unique answers from our “family members”
Finally, we welcomed The Over Tones, who serenaded us with a medley of festive favorites and taught us how to sing Barbershop!
To end, just a couple of reminders: as we had soooo many gifts donated, it was very difficult to announce and acknowledge each one individually.
Members, if you won a prize that had a business card attached, please reach out to that person with a quick thank you email to say you won a prize that they donated. After all, we are about the networking.
Don’t forgot to register for the January 2 meeting and to bring cash for the raffle and 50/50 prize and win fantastic stuff!
