Speaker’s Corner with Carla Berquo: Engaging with Tribes

Who’s in your tribe? At every GWIN meeting our Programs Coordinator Wendy Owens does an amazing job of finding the best and brightest in Waterloo-Wellington Region. This month’s speaker was the knowledgeable Carla Berquo. Here are a few words about her presentation on Engaging with Tribes.

moragh and carla after calra's presentation engaging with tribesCreating tribes is forming a sense of fun, friendship and community. Tribes develop a positive environment that promotes human growth and learning; by learning to build a community through attentive listening, appreciation and mutual respect.

“Leaders lead when they take positions, when they connect with their tribes, and when they help the tribe connect to itself.” (Seth Godin)

As a tribe leader one has the chance to influence, express diverse attitude, opinions, positions, and personal feelings. Leaders put forth ideas without others passing judgment and help people respect individual differences. They also use participatory methods of decision making so all tribe members feel they are of value to the tribe. A leader will help members share leadership.

Tribe members need to feel included, need to be acknowledged as having been heard, appreciated, and welcomed. In turn, members will be offering something back; they will express their hopes and/or expectations.

A successful tribe is dedicated to resolving rather than avoiding problems; learning and practicing collaboration skills and spending time to reflect on how well the tribe is doing as a whole.

Get actively engaged with your tribes. Build engagement through relationships. Build relationships through conversations. One conversation at a time.

Thanks again Carla for an excellent presentation! We really enjoyed hearing from you. You insight and experience is so inspiring. From all of the note taking in the room you can tell the GWIN membership really learned a lot. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

See you at the next GWIN meeting!
